Hi,
As of yesterday, the Swiss banking system has been upgraded to support instant payments. These payments will be made in less than 10 seconds, and they can be done at any time (24 hours per day and 365 days per year).
Will that change anything? Not really. These new instant payments are optional, so you have to select for each payment which system you want. So, most payments will still be the old slugs we know.
Will it be free? Each bank will be free to charge anything for these outgoing payments (incoming should always be free). For instance, at UBS, it will cost 5 CHF to make an instant payment and Raiffeisen recommends 2 CHF. Apparently, HBL will not charge anything, so it is good news that not all banks have opted for greed.
Currently, very few banks have implemented outgoing instant payments, but this will likely come in the coming months.
This could be useful in some niche emergency cases, but overall, I don't think this new system will change anything.
What do you think?
