To buy or not to buy?

Hi Baptiste,
Trump wins and the market seems to go up. Now the market is still closed, but should open in 2 hours. Would you buy now to ride with the wave, or wait a few days until the election fever calms and the market fluctuates less? I want to invest a low 6digit number.

Hi

Honestly, if you have a long-term approach to investing, I think it is not relevant at all. I ignore all events when I invest, always on a set schedule.

A general advice you will probably see everywhere: never trade politics, stick to your strategy. There was money to be made if you placed "bets", but for me that's gambling, not investing and it requires a lot of focus.

In your case, it's a bit tricky, because you have a significant amount to invest. There are various strategies (split in x parts, spend monthly, etc.) you could apply there to make it easier to handle what will happen in the coming months without trying to time the market.

Yes I know, you are right. I plan on the long term. But if you buy 120K worth of VT when the price is at 113USD or 121USD, it makes both a difference in how much you buy now, plus how much it is worth it in 20 years.
But it is true, it is not really possible to time the market. Especially, if this is not a full time job. BTW, in the end I bought :)
