Interactive Brokers Referral Shares

My mother received IB referral shares last year. I tried to sell them last year (simple market sell order) to simplify her tax declaration. But the shares weren't sold.

Anyone has experience with these shares? Are they vested automatically after a certain time? Or is there a way to see at which point they can be sold?

Thanks!

Hi gaijin, I sold all of my IB referral shares.
Each fractional share can only be sold 12 months after the date you received it.

Every fraction has its own 12-month vesting period. I waited about 12 months (and a few days) after receiving the last fractional share, then I sold everything together.

In my case, it was a little more than two years after opening the account.

The referral shares are subject to a one-year holding restriction, so a normal market order will simply be rejected if the restriction is still active. Check the Award Date in the IBKR activity statement; the shares should become transferable after the relevant one-year period. If they still cannot be sold after that date, I’d contact IBKR support to confirm the restriction has been removed.
